Powered by an Intel Core M-5Y70 clocked at 1.1GHz which can be bumped up to a maximum of 2.6GHz in Turbo Mode. The resolution on the worthier model has also been increased at up to 1920 x 1080 pixels. The model can be fitted with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. In the port/connectivity department, the convertible bundles HDMI, 2 x USB 3.0 ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 33Wh battery.

Strong Build Design

The Envy’s casing is largely comprised of silver aluminum. A black plastic bezel surrounds the screen. The speakers are behind a perforated cover on both sides of the screen. The tablet part is quite slim with a height of 1.5 cm. However, the user will not want to hold it for a longer time due to its weight of approximately 1.8 kg (2.45 kg with docked keyboard). That will not be necessary because the tablet features a stand, which enables various angles. There is no risk that the stand will fold over. A bit of force is needed to adjust it. We naturally cannot say what that will look like after a few years of use.

Connectivity

Despite the limited room compared with a convertible with a foldable screen, HP has managed to integrate the most important interfaces. Two full-sized USB 3.0 ports (not micro-USB) are installed. Even an SD memory-card reader (not micro-SD) has moved in.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Full-size island style thin cover backlit wireless Bluetooth keyboard, featuring a keyboard deck in mocha brown with a biscotti tan soft cover. Backlit wireless keyboard. The keyboard is attached to the tablet with a magnet. The fastening supplies the keyboard with energy and recharges the keyboard’s battery. The tablet and keyboard are actually linked via Bluetooth, and thus a physical connection between the two is not really needed. The touchpad is not located below the keyboard, but rather at its side. That has an advantage: The lower half of the keyboard can be folded and the Envy can then be used even in tight spaces. The keyboard’s underside is made of gray-white textile. The upper side is covered by soft, black leatherette. The keyboard can also be used as a protective cover for the screen. It closes on the tablet via a magnetic clasp.

Wait a second, Core M?

Intel decided that the first representatives of the new Broadwell generation wouldn’t be ultrabook processors or high-performance quad-core powerhouses — instead they started the Core M series with chips for tablets and thin, 2-in-1 notebooks. That’s the new label for the CPUs that until now have been characterized by a simple “Y” at the end of their model numbers, whose power consumption rates lie considerably below the 15 Watts needed by processors in the “U” series. While some Haswell Models were specified at 11.5 Watts, the TDP for Core M processors has sunk to just 4.5 Watts. Intel promises that this will enable manufacturers to build thinner devices with passive cooling.

Immersive Audio

HP installed a “Beats Audio” system, which describes the software to improve the sound. The speakers create a rather metallic, with still a decent sound that would benefit from more bass. A better sound experience is available with headphones or external speakers.
